New Science Partners offers educational, advisory and development services relating to optimization and decision support systems.

NSP maintains an ongoing effort to monitor the evolution of the science and how it can be applied to the energy industry
We have conducted numerous briefings and executive seminars which raise the executive community's awareness of the value of the science. An event can be custom created for your company which focuses on your business applications and the science that applies to your business issues.
Several companies have taken their executive teams to Santa Fe for a business strategy session in which exposure to the new science is used as a catalyst in the creation of new business strategies and initiatives.

We are adept at working with our clients to understand the science and identify potential applications to their business. In general, there are three categories of opportunity:
The ability to see the “landscape of solutions” of a very complicated set of variables and to “search the landscape” for the optimum solution based on multiple objectives.
The ability to build a working model of a business situation in which the “agents” have “behaviors” and can modify their tactics based on their results. The system evolves on its own and new strategies and tactics emerge.
The ability to apply new, superior techniques (ant pheromone trail logic as a metaphor for interrupt scheduling, for example) to traditional scheduling problems.
We can work with you to define opportunities that align with your specific business initiatives.
CAS applications range from stand alone modules executed upon request to completely integrated applications that are a part of the standard production application suite. Selection of the specific scientific techniques that fit a particular business problem is accomplished by a specialist who is well versed in the capabilities of the science, and the design of the data access architecture and application is the responsibility of a developer with specific industry experience.
Is accomplished by a business analyst working with your personnel to identify and quantify the business result expected from the application of the science and to define the criteria for success of the effort.
Because the application of CAS to business is a new science, an actual proof of concept phase is necessary to make sure that a business application of the science will indeed result in the expected benefits identified in the Business Value Assessment. Organization, cultural and procedural issues will be considered as well as technical feasibility.

As with any IT implementation, the design of the business system is critical to the effective performance of the information system within. Particularly with CAS based systems, in which the effective use of the new science may call for fundamentally different practices and procedures in the business community, designing the business system around the new science is essential to success.
At this point in the evolution of the use of CAS in business the more fundamental capabilities of the science have already been reduced to application packages. Biosgroup, our science partner, offers a range of standard optimization and decision support products. If the business issue can be solved by the application of one of these products, it is almost always a more cost effective solution than custom development. But, since the range of current offerings is limited, it is often necessary to develop a custom system to solve the problem. These custom systems still make use of standard optimization modules for the science, but have custom GUI interfaces, processing features and reporting capabilities that align with the clients business needs. In most instances, because the natures of the problems that CAS is called upon to solve are usually difficult, multi- function optimization problems, the data architecture of the application will span several production/legacy system boundaries, calling for the creation of a custom data architecture to drive the application.
Integration of the CAS application into the technical systems architecture of the client is essential to the effective operation of the application in the day to day business of the client. Assuring that the module is interfaced correctly with the data sources necessary will insure timely and accurate results from its use.
Because CAS applications often call for different operating philosophies and procedures to be effective, the system implementation phase has a strong emphasis on the education/training of the personnel in the organization who will use the application and interpret the results. Integrating the application completely into the business process flow of the organization will insure that the value of the CAS module's capability will result in improved business results for the client. |
